O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I’m far away. You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do. You know what I am going to say even before I say it, Lord. You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand.
I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence! If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there. If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the farthest oceans, even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me
For you made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed. How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered! I can’t even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand!
Points of Interest
• Over and over the Psalmist repeats, “You know me, You see me.” It is an amazing thing that God would know us and see us. But even more than just that, god responds with love: “You place your hand of blessing on my head.” Maybe the reason God can love us so well is because God knows us so well. The greatest desire of the human heart is belonging and acceptance. Many people at their lowest points have taken great solace that God loves them more fully and completely than any other. Oh that we would be able to know that love even at our highest points!
• “How precious are your thoughts about me, O God.” What amazing affirmation that when God thinks about us, he thinks us in a precious way! How easy is it for us to look at ourselves and feel something very different from that! God knows and sees everything about us, and even so, his overwhelming response is love.
Taking it Home
Keeping in mind that God’s voice if full of love, encouragement, and hope, allow God to speak to you for a few moments about what God sees in you! If you are feeling particularly down in any way, spend some time talking to God about that and asking God for grace, mercy, and healing.
For your “at least one”
Ask God to bring an increase of joyful hope into the life of your “at least one.”
For our church
Psalm 139 tells us that even if we travel to the other side of the ocean, that God will find us and guide us. What amazing grace! Pray that we will be a church that extends that grace to the world around us.
